Cena di Martedi Grasso

CARNEVALE 2012

Carnevale, or Madi Gras, is celebrated throughout Italy in the weeks prior to Ash Wednesday which marks
the beginning of Lent, a period of abstinence.  It is a time of merry making and indulgence.  The
celebrations culminate on Martedi Grasso (Fat Tuesday) which falls this year on February 21.

One of the most famous and oldest Carnevale celebrations is held in Venice.  Carnevale costumes and
masks are an important part of the celebration.  The masks allowed people to disguise themselves so
their merry making antics would not be attributed to them.

Italian children enjoy the parades, jugglers, magicians and stilt walkers that fill the streets at Carnevale.
They chant “ A Carnevlae, ogni scherzo vale, evviva il Carnevale”.  (During Carnevale, all pranks are good,
long live Carnevale)

As with all Italian Festivities, food plays an important role.  Every Italian town has its regional Carnevale
dishes and pastries.  Carnevale food is rich and flavorful.

Join us in celebrating this period.  The daily specials will reflect the various regional Carnevale Foods.
